What is the Austrian digital vignette?
The Austrian digital vignette (Digitale Vignette) is a mandatory toll authorisation for using Austrian motorways and expressways managed by ASFINAG. Since 2023, it has been fully digital — linked to your vehicle's licence plate number rather than a physical sticker.
Do I need a vignette for all roads in Austria?
No. The vignette is only required on motorways (Autobahnen) and expressways (Schnellstrassen) managed by ASFINAG. Federal roads, provincial roads and municipal roads do not require a vignette.
Do electric vehicles need a vignette?
Yes. Electric vehicles are not exempt from the vignette requirement. All motor vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes — regardless of fuel type — must have a valid vignette to use Austrian motorways.
Where can I buy the digital vignette?
The official purchase channel is the ASFINAG online shop (shop.asfinag.at). You can also purchase at ASFINAG service points, petrol stations, OEAMTC/ARBOE offices, and authorised resellers.
How far in advance can I buy a vignette?
You can purchase a 10-day or 2-month vignette up to 30 days before the chosen start date. The annual vignette goes on pre-sale from 1 December for the following calendar year.
What happens if I enter the wrong plate number?
If you notice the error before the validity start date, cancel the vignette and repurchase with the correct plate. After the start date, contact ASFINAG customer service immediately.
When does my vignette become valid?
The vignette becomes valid from 00:00 on the chosen start date. For the annual vignette purchased in the pre-sale period (December), it activates on 1 January of the following year.
How is the vignette enforced?
ASFINAG operates a network of automated number-plate recognition cameras at motorway entry points. These cameras check all passing vehicles against the database of valid vignettes in real time.
What is the fine for driving without a vignette?
The on-the-spot fine (Ersatzmaut) for driving without a valid vignette is €120. If the offence is prosecuted formally, the fine can reach up to €3,000.
I have a trailer. Do I need two vignettes?
If your trailer has its own registered licence plate, yes — you need a separate vignette for the trailer. If the trailer shares the towing vehicle's plate, no additional vignette is required.
Can I get a refund if my trip is cancelled?
Yes, if the validity period has not yet started. Cancel through the ASFINAG portal before the start date. No refund is possible once the validity has begun.
Do rental cars need a vignette?
Many rental car companies pre-purchase annual vignettes for their fleet. Check with your rental company before or at the time of collection.
